5 Tips for Keeping Your Electronics Safe and Sound

electronic storageAs technology continues to grow and expand, so does the number of devices we own. Just look around you; you’ll probably see a toaster, electric kettle, TV, computer, a laptop, a few phones, a sound system, and more. As new technology comes in the house, there is a need to find new places for outdated devices. Whether you are saving a computer for your child, hoping to sell a device in the future, or holding on to a TV for your next house, keeping these items in peak condition is critical for future use. Often times electronics and other pieces of digital equipment go to waste while they are stowed away. They may be working before you put them aside, then you come to find they have lost all functionality once you pull them out a couple years later.

How can this be avoided?

Take advantage of these 5 essential tips for storing electronics, staying organized, and keeping your valuable electronics in tip-top condition.

1)Avoid putting your devices in a basement, closet, or any other place where you will forget about them.
By storing items in your home, the chances are high that they will stay there for many more years. Rather than finding a new place for your device, this simply creates more unnecessary clutter, keep them in a separate location to avoid clutter and keep track of your electronics. 2) Keep all cords organized and separated.
Nothing is more painful than untangling cords. Depending on how many devices you have, this task could take hours! Anytime you put electronics in storage, be sure to use velcro cable ties to prevent this from happening. Velcro cable ties are easy-to-use, reusable, and gentle on any wire type.

3) Get rid of any liquids or moisture!
This may seem obvious to some, but many fail to realize that without a proper climate control system in place, rooms can easily gather moisture. Moisture will immediately damage your electronics, leaving them worthless. The only way to guarantee a zero-moisture environment is by putting them in a unit designed for this exact purpose.

4) Off to Goodwill!
Be honest with yourself about which electronics you will use down the road. If you truly envision the device being used by a family member in the future or you know you will use it yourself, then by all means keep them stowed away in an alternative location. If your electronics are going to collect dust for years, donating them may be your best solution.

5) Keep your electronics safe by choosing the location wisely.

Once you have located a place to put away your old electronics, be sure to put them in the safest location possible. Typically, this is the back of the unit which you have rented or reserved. By keeping them behind your other valuables, you prevent silly mishaps such as items falling forward as you roll the door open.
